LED Floating Shelf
A wraparound floating shelf for a kids' Star Wars-themed bedroom, with LED strips hidden top and bottom and hex acoustic tiles added just for the spaceship look.
The kids’ room needed more storage for Legos and action figures than it had, so instead of just adding a bookcase, I built a floating shelf that wraps around the top of the room. To lean into the room’s Star Wars theme, I hid LED strips along the top and bottom edges of the shelf and stuck a scattering of hex-shaped acoustic tiles on the walls for a bit of a spaceship-hull look.
Structurally, this is about as minimal as a shelf gets — no brackets, no visible supports, just a plywood top fastened to a ledger hidden against the wall, with the front edge floating on nothing but the wood itself. That’s the point: the LEDs underneath only look like they’re glowing in midair if there’s nothing visibly holding the shelf up.
It was never going to hold much more than plastic minifigures and the occasional Godzilla, and I built it knowing that — no brackets, on purpose, specifically because brackets would have ruined the floating effect. It has more strength than it will ever actually need for that job, which is really all a shelf like this has to promise.
